Project Details

A section of Mink ACSR conductor remained within a line primarily composed of coyote ACSR, limiting the maximum current rating of the asset. Aerial line surveys identified a number of ground clearance violations while the structures in this section were an old design presenting climbing hazards.

The necessity for works was established with input from ETL’s condition assessment team, Transpower’s network modelling, and ETL assessment of PLSCADD models from Aerial Line survey.

ETL Engineering used PLSCADD software to develop a preliminary design of the asset. The engineer, project manager and project supervisor visited the site, met with landowners, pegged out structure locations (with some changes as requested by landowners). Revised locations were re-modelled, structural design carried out and a design finalised.

Structures were installed over several days, with stringing occurring under a subsequent outage.

An as-built survey was carried out by ENS upon completion of the site works.

Works were scheduled for winter months to minimise disruption and losses to orchards, this allowed for temporary disturbance of grape vines, and apples which were reinstated with no losses.

Project Outcomes

Capacity of MOT-STK 1 circuit increased to provide redundancy of supply to Mot, and to allow peak loads from Cobb generation to be injected into the grid at Stoke. Durable structures with a long projected life were installed minimising future maintenance needs, enabling safe climbing for inspection whilst energised. Increased clearance over land subjected to significant horticultural development. Replacement of pi pole structures with single pole structures increased landowners’ access to their property


This project was taken from framing to completion including as-built documentation within Electronet. Full integration allowed effective interaction with land owners while the design was reviewed by those carrying out construction. This structure allows rapid response to any design changes with no escalation of costs, and ensures clear lines of communication between the designers and field crews.
